Just when you thought the festival season was over, here comes New Orleans’ Voodoo Fest 2016 with a killer line up. We know if would be a hike for fellow Philadelphians, but a hike well worth the warmer weather, creole culture, and downright great music. This three-day festival not only brings the hype with the stellar lineup and excitement Halloween weekend, it is also an impressive gathering of local art and food that can’t be underestimated.
Since it is New Orleans, this city is pulling out all the creative stops they have for this festival. This year you can peruse the art market with hand-crafted art vendors finding unique stuff to buy.
Along with the art, the food is going to be just as delightful. New Orleans is the city of food so get your expectations high for this year’s “Forked Up Food Court.” Food establishments from all over New Orleans and Louisiana will be showing you why it’s a city known for its food. Prepare yourself for some delicious creole home styled cooking.
Now for the music, Friday starts the festival off strong with some names you’ll recognize like Bear Hands, Foals, Cheat Codes, and Mutemath to kick off the day. You know Bear Hands by their hit “Giants” as well as favorites “Agora” and “2 AM.” If you haven’t listened to the new album You’ll Pay For This, which dropped in April, definitely give it a listen if you plan on catching their set at the festival.
Although Foals hasn’t released anything since 2015 , they are still a favorite with a thunderous stage presence that can’t be missed. Also hitting the festival Friday, a Musies favorite, Porter Robinson, a genre-transcending electronic artist that will surely bring the action. But what everyone is really hype for is the headliner The Weeknd, and Loyola alumni G-Eazy. The Weeknd has gotten perpetual attention for his songs “Can’t Feel My Face” and his new collaboration with Daft Punk “Starboy”. G-Eazy will definitely be bringing it all to a festival in the city that helped raise him to fame.
Saturday just gets better with early performers Kid Love, Leon, Saint Motel, Nothing But Thieves, Shakey Graves, Oh Wonder, and Alison Wonderland. Saint Motel’s set is definitely going to be a popular one with their hit “My Type”, and the fact that they just released another single “Born Again” definitely doesn’t hurt. These guys bring it, horns and all.
Another band with a killer hit that will definitely be bringing fans to their time slot is Nothing But Thieves with their single “Trip Switch” that has been featured all over the airwaves.
For all our electro fans, Alison Wonderland will be playing in the evening on Saturday, and her melodic trap stylings are sure to satisfy every electro-head.
The big acts of Saturday are Cage The Elephant and Tool. After the release of Tell Me I’m Pretty , everyone is anticipating Cage’s live renditions of new songs. Matthew Shultz brings so much energy to every performance, and we can’t wait to hoist him up during his multiple stage dives.
And then we reach Sunday. Awesome bands like Anderson Paak & The Free Nationals, Sir The Baptist, Party Favor, and Lookas as well as a New Orleans classic, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band. If you are from out of town and want to get a taste of what the city is all about, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band is a show you need to catch.
The big acts of the day are Band of Horses , The Chainsmokers, and Arcade Fire. Why Voodoo put The Chainsmokers at the same time as Arcade Fire in the schedule creates one of the biggest scheduling conflicts of the weekend. These two acts have two very different but amazing signature styles; both highly representational of their respective generations.
All in all Voodoo Fest 2016 is a weekend that isn’t likely to disappoint. Better get your tickets now before it is too late…
