We’re just a year removed from Mac Miller‘s masterpiece record, GO:OD AM, and he has already returned with another LP in The Divine Feminine. After the critical acclaim his previous release received, an enormous expectation was placed on the Pittsburgh native for his fourth studio album.
Stacked with features from names like Kendrick Lamar, Anderson .Paak, and Ariana Grande, Mac paints a picture of a relationship and all the emotions that come with it through 10 tracks. Although the theme doesn’t feel fully consistent, tracks like “Soulmate” opens up with a sample from Robin Williams in Good Will Hunting saying, “Do you have a soulmate? Somebody who challenges you?” This really brought it all together for me, and allowed me to see Mac’s vision for The Divine Feminine.
My favorite track has to be “My Favorite Part (feat. Ariana Grande)” because of Mac’s experimenting with singing. Along with producing a majority of this album, I believe this song illustrates him pressing the boundaries of his own musical capabilities.
