Since January of 2016, fans have been eagerly awaiting on Skin, Harley Streten’s (Flume) sophomore album, to be released. I read in my notifications that “Skin was available for download” at 11:58 pm on May 26th and almost threw my phone at a wall.
Skin is one of the most emotionally-moving albums I have heard in 2016. Flume has already been considered a pioneer artist for electronic music, and this album just set his rank so much higher.
Not only is the production of this album beyond incredible, but the features on this album are admirable. Skin features artists from so many different genres and yet they blend so well. Knowing Harley has a wide variety in music taste, it is amazing to see him successfully working with artists of so many musical backgrounds. There are the more widely appealing songs like “Never Be Like You” featuring Kai and “Say It” featuring pop star Tove Lo, but Flume sticks to his classic, experimental sound in songs like “Helix” and “Free.”
Skin can bring forth a threshold of emotions from any listener. From very ambient to super high energy moments, this album brings you on a journey through your emotions. I would go as far as saying Flume is comparable to musical Picasso. The songs on Skin remind me more of artwork rather than any average song. With such a raw sound to this album, I believe that Flume has revealed his true Skin on this album.
While the wait is finally over, the excitement to see Flume live has only begun. Harley spoke with DIY Magazine and told them, “For the headline shows, I’m really going to try and take people up as high as possible with the high-energy stuff, and then take them completely down with some kind of 10-minute ambient section. This album gives me a lot of building blocks to put on a really epic experience: I want it to feel like a Cirque De Soleil show.” Recently, Harley has announced a world tour and tickets have been flying fast. It is evident that Flume is receiving the recognition he deserves since over 20 of his shows have sold out already. You can purchase tickets for his world tour here.
