If Temple University’s Snapchat story didn’t express it enough, Ty Dolla $ign was in Philly on Wednesday for a songwriting session and a question & answer. Fans and artists from all over the city gathered to the Draught Horse on a late afternoon to gain some knowledge from a pioneer in the hip-hop game.

Words of advice spanned from a profound exclamation of, “fuck the industry”, to “letting the beat write the lyrics for you”. Ty continued to urge the crowd to collaborate with all your peers instead of trying to put them down. He pushed for more cohesiveness in the hip-hop game to create more opportunity to formulate something special.

Advice wasn’t the only thing handed out during the “songwriting” session. A bottle of Jameson that Ty brought in for his drinking pleasure was passed around to fans. As everyone gained a bit of a buzz, a question & answer discussion was opened. The LA rapper gave some previews of features on his album, which included names like DJ Mustard, Kendrick Lamar, Wiz Khalifia, Trey Songz, and more. My favorite answer Dolla $ign delivered had to do with a question about working with Kanye West. A supposed artist asked the question of, “How do you keep you stay true to yourself and your sound when you work with someone like Yeezy?”. And with complete composure, Ty answered by saying that getting in the studio with anyone is collaborative process. It doesn’t matter who you are with at the end of the day. It could be the smallest, most local artist from your hometown or Kanye West, and all that matters is that you are both trying to create something great.

You can purchase the pre-order of Ty’s debut album Free TC, which features songs like “Blase” with Future and Rae Sremmurd, here.
